Greetings from Mountain Freshies!

Posted 8/26/2019 3:37pm by Nancy.

We are mid-way through our Farm-to-Family Harvest Box season, so we thought it was a good time to touch base and provide a few updates!

The cool, wet weather this spring delayed harvests and even caused some crop failure for a few growers, but compared to the past 3-4 seasons which were unusually warm and dry, the weather we experienced was actually more the norm than the exception.  We are now ramped up and more great produce is headed your way!

Here is a link to a great newspaper article which came out today about Austin Family Farm we thought you’d enjoy reading:  https://www.aspentimes.com/news/local/family-community-and-fantastic-produce/ We hope it inspires you to head on over to Paonia to tour the farm and meet the Austins!

At Mountain Freshies we believe recycling is vital to responsible produce distribution.  In fact, farmers consider themselves the original recyclers because nothing on a farm is ever disposed of that can be reused.  Thus, we invested in well-constructed boxes that would last an entire Farm-to-Family season, but we’ve already had to reorder boxes twice because our return rate is not as high as expected.  Please help us do the right thing by returning your box each week to the pickup location when you receive your new box.  It is good for the planet and helps us keep costs down.

We’ve also made a conscious effort to keep your produce fresh and organized by using a combination of environmentally friendly molded pulp baskets and plastic bags. The pulp baskets are compostable and the plastic bags are made from 100% recycled resin and are also recyclable.  The reason we don’t use compostable plastic bags is because they breathe, which is not what you want for lettuces/greens during transport.  Greens need to retain their moisture in order to arrive fresh and pure to your door.  We are also not sure how many of our customers are composting and unless compostable bags are actually composted, it is better to use bags that can be recycled.  We’d love to hear from you if you are composting, as that would be useful information to know moving forward.

We hope you are enjoying your freshies as much as we love delivering them, so please send us your feedback and let us know how we're doing!

Aloha from our family to yours!
