What's in Your Box for Aug 5!

Posted 8/5/2020 1:42pm by Nancy.

Greetings from Mountain Freshies!

We received a lot of positive feedback after last week's email, so we're happy to continue helping identify some of what's in your box!  By the end of the season, we'll all be experts!  Below is a list of some of the more interesting items you may see this week, please remember that we don't typically have enough of everything for all the boxes, so contents will vary.

It is smart to try a small bit of pepper before going all in.  Sometimes peppers you buy in a grocery store are not nearly as strong as the same variety grown locally.  I included a heat scale in last week's email and there are a ton of online resources if you want to dig into it a bit more.

1: The dark green peppers are Poblanos and below them are a color variety of Banana Peppers.

2: Yellow Fin Squash, much brighter color than typical summer squash.

3: Clockwise from left - New Mexico Small Chili Peppers, Green Bell Pepper, Gypsy Pepper, Lavender Bell Pepper.

4: Kholrabi - use a sharp knife to peel it, it can be eaten raw (a little spicy like a radish, combined with a turnip), you can roast it or shred it and use it like a cabbage slaw. Only a few went out this week, but we'll continue to get more.

5: The larger smooth cucumber is a typical slicer cuke, the smaller bumpier ones are pickling cukes, they can be used the same as slicers and I find them to be a little sweeter!

6: Shiro Plums

7: Tomatillos, one of my favorites, they are best roasted, don't try them raw in a salad, remove the husk, it is not edible and then rinse as they are sticky underneath.

Enjoy your boxes!

Greetings from Mountain Freshies!  We've been out of touch for a couple of weeks, but are ready to get back on track now that I-70 has reopened and things have calmed down a bit.

Our thoughts are with the firefighters, evacuees and everyone affected by the Grizzly Creek fire which has closed both eastbound and westbound traffic on I-70 in Glenwood Canyon.  We discussed op
