Where's the Greens!? Where's the Bonus Boxes!? and other updates :-)

Posted 8/31/2020 3:47pm by Nancy.
Greetings from Mountain Freshies!  We've been out of touch for a couple of weeks, but are ready to get back on track now that I-70 has reopened and things have calmed down a bit.  Please know that we welcome your questions, so if you aren't hearing from us and can't identify an item in your box etc., feel free to reach out and ask, we are here to help!

More fruit has been harvested these past few weeks, so we're happy to be catching up and hope you are enjoying it!  We'll have many different varieties of apples coming throughout the rest of the season and a good amount of pears as well. On the flip side, plums are going to be light this year and we're missing our nectarines.  Concord grapes are a few weeks away, Glenn is having a hard time keeping the birds off them, as they were used to feeding off other crops that got damaged in the freeze, so we're keeping our fingers crossed.  Peach season is winding down and while it was challenging this year, the quality and flavor seemed to be sweeter than ever and they will be missed!

Bonus fruit boxes are coming soon for those who paid in full before May 1 or referred 2+ new customers.  They will be delivered over a 2-3 week period split between our routes, as we aren't able to distribute them all at once.  Christina will be in touch when your box is scheduled.

The North Fork Valley has been HOT, HOT, HOT and DRY, DRY, DRY this summer...until this past weekend, when it turned cool and rainy.  The Night Shade veggies have tolerated the hot/dry well, which is why you're seeing onions, peppers, eggplant and potatoes in the boxes. Greens and tomatoes need cooler weather, which we finally got this weekend, so here's hoping we'll have more for your boxes soon.  We were also hoping for a final cantaloupe harvest this weekend, but with the cooler weather they failed to ripen in time...a good reminder that Mother Nature determines the abundance we get to experience and be thankful for each week!

Please note that our standard size white boxes are larger than they need to be to accommodate 8 - 10 lbs of produce.  We moved up to a larger box last year, so bigger items like heads of lettuce and cantaloupes etc. would fit and the boxes could be more diverse.  We realize this can have a psychological effect if a box isn't packed and overflowing, but please know that we weigh every box before it goes out the door to make sure it is within range.

Demand has grown since Covid, so we are working to align with more like-minded, small, local farms with the hopes of continuing to support you after our Farm-to-Family season ends in mid-October.  Field to Plate certified organic produce is back in the mix, you'll see their carrots and maybe some snap peas in your boxes this week.  Their produce is also available on our wholesale list, along with the amazing certified organic mushrooms from South River Aquaponics.  If you are not currently receiving our weekly wholesale list and would like to be added, please email Kerry at orders@mountainfreshies.com.  Please note there are a few Farm-to-Family host locations that do not support wholesale drops.

We'd like to have all outstanding balances for this season paid in full no later than Monday, September 7.  Please use this link if you need to check your balance and make final payment:  http://austinfamilyfarm.csasignup.com/members/pay

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for all the latest info and check out the beautiful, unique dishes our peeps are preparing with our freshies, so much talent out there, it makes us smile!
